OAK HARBOR — One man died and three others were taken to the hospital after a five-car crash Tuesday morning on north Whidbey Island.
The Washington State Patrol reported that Franz Pfister, 82, of Oak Harbor, died at the scene. The accident at Highway 20 and N. Jones Road was reported shortly after 9 a.m.
Three other drivers — an Oak Harbor man, 80; a Burlington man, 88; and an Oak Harbor woman, 41 — were transported to Whidbey General Hospital for medical treatment.
Pfister was driving a car when he attempted to pass a truck, the State Patrol reported. His vehicle struck the truck and went southbound into a northbound lane where it collided head-on with a pickup truck.
The pickup then crashed into another pickup truck while Pfister’s vehicle collided with another passenger car, according to an accident memo.
