Glen Allen Moore was born Feb. 9, 1907, in rural Missouri. About 1912 he moved with more than 30 members of his extended family by railroad to Mount Vernon. Glen grew up enjoying the woods, wildlife and streams of the state. His family owned Morovitz Ranch on the south side of Mount Rainier.
In 1926, he was a member of the first graduating class of Skagit Valley College. He also attended Washington State College in Pullman. Glen worked with his engineer father Allen Moore on a number of mines and with his brother, Bill Moore, on carpentry jobs. In 1936, Glen saved the life of a 12-year-old boy who was drowning in Big Lake near Mount Vernon.
Glen married Helen A. McMaster on June 30, 1940, at First Baptist Church in Bellingham. The couple had two children.
Glen earned a three-year pastor’s certificate in 1946 from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. In 1949, he was pastor of a church in Silver Lake. Glen also worked in a lumber mill and door factory in Everett. During the 1950s, he and Helen worked in small rural Sunday schools and he served for many years in a team gospel ministry to county jail inmates in Everett.
Glen retired from working as a school custodian for the Everett Public Schools in 1972. He and Helen moved to Bremerton in 1976. They sang with Senior Singers, attended AARP meetings and made new friends in the area. Helen died on Oct. 25, 1999.
Glen later volunteered with Chuckwagon meals and read the Bible to residents at Belmont Terrace. He continues to volunteer at the Sylvan Way Baptist Church day care center, telling stories to preschool children.
In 2004, Glen attended the 75th anniversary of Skagit Valley College. Since he was a member of the founding class, he was invited to say a few words, which he did, accompanied by his grandson, who is now on the faculty of the community college.
Glen has six grandchildren. For the past 20 months, Glen has delighted in playing with his first great-grandchild. Glen keeps busy at church functions and with his family. A birthday reception is planned for 2:30 to 4 p.m. Feb. 10 at Lincoln Avenue Bible Church, lower level, 1250 Lincoln Ave., Bremerton.
