GRANITE FALLS — A father and son from the Spokane area are believed dead after the wreckage of their small airplane was spotted Saturday afternoon in the mountains northeast of Granite Falls.
Sunday, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office rescue crews plan to try to reach the wreckage, located south of Liberty Mountain in treacherous terrain.
The two men were headed to the Arlington Fly-In on Friday evening. When they didn’t arrive, a friend reported the men missing Saturday morning.
The Department of Transportation’s Aviation Division began a radar track to pinpoint the plane’s last known location.
A search and rescue helicopter from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island was at the Fly-in and checked the area a short time later.
A rescuer was lowered to the site and no survivors were found at the scene.
The crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration.
