EVERETT — An explosion in an Everett hotel room sent two people to the hospital Monday afternoon.
The man and woman are expected to survive their injuries. They were staying at the Delta by Marriott at 3105 Pine St.
They might have had a candle burning that got too close to a butane canister, causing it to burst, Everett police officer Aaron Snell said.
Other people in the hotel could hear the blast, he said. Calls started coming into 911 around 12:30 p.m.
The pair were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Snell said. Another person had concerns of smoke inhalation. No one else was hurt.
An investigation is under way.
The hotel, which used to be the Holiday Inn, has about 230 rooms after a renovation in recent years. It’s just west of I-5.
About a dozen bystanders and hotel staff were waiting outside the building after the incident.
Medics were using a stethoscope to evaluate someone. The group was sitting on some concrete steps leading to the hotel entrance.
Young people were gathered together wearing their swimsuits with towels wrapped around themselves. They showed up just as the situation was unfolding. They were planning on swimming in the hotel pool during the afternoon.
A hotel employee ordered the group away from the sidewalk and onto private property to keep them from answering questions from reporters.
