EVERETT — Police said it doesn’t appear that two incidents in which boys displayed gun-shaped objects Thursday at two different schools within blocks of each other were connected.
"At this point, it just appears to be a coincidence," Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said.
Voyager Middle School was locked down shortly after noon when a student told a teacher that a classmate had displayed a handgun, Mukilteo School District spokesman Andy Muntz said.
The eighth-grader bolted after seeing deputies and ran toward nearby Discovery Elementary School. The school was locked down, along with nearby Mariner High School.
While this was going on, a student at Mariner told authorities a classmate had brandished a handgun.
Police caught up with both boys, Jorgensen said.
Deputies learned that the eighth-grader had thrown a gun-shaped cigarette lighter into the street, where it was run over several times by cars, Jorgensen said. The ninth-grader had a cap gun, which he attempted to hide in a trash can.
Neither boy was arrested. Jorgensen said no threats were made, but the information will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for possible charges.
The district will take disciplinary measures against the boys as directed by state law, said Rick Robbins, executive director of secondary education for the Everett School District. He declined to say what those actions might be.
Voyager was locked down for about an hour. The other schools were locked down for about 30 minutes, Muntz said.
No injuries were reported.
