STANWOOD — A pair of Stanwood police received medical treatment for smoke inhalation after helping clear residents from a senior citizens’ home during a brief fire Wednesday night.
The police sergeant and an officer both are employed by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, which has a contract with the city of Stanwood.
The fire was reported Wednesday evening in the 7400 block of 276th Street NW.
The fire started on a stove top where boxes were stacked. The stove accidentally was turned on, North County Regional Fire Authority Chief John Cermak said.
Sprinklers quickly put the fire out, and 49 residents were cleared from the smoky building.
Water damage displaced five residents.
“Sprinklers did what they were supposed to do,” Cermak said. “They probably saved many lives.”
