2,700 competing in Special Olympics at JBLM

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. — About 2,700 athletes are competing this weekend in the Special Olympics at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The games include soccer, track and field, swimming, cycling and powerlifting. A crowd of about 13,000 is expected to attend.

The News Tribune reports the events will qualify 40 participants for the nationals next year in New Jersey. The competitors will be randomly selected from the winners who submit applications.

Teams of law enforcement officers from across the state ran with a torch for the opening ceremony.
