SPOKANE VALLEY — A 9-year-old boy who was shot in the head is the second person to die in what authorities are calling a violent domestic dispute in Spokane Valley.
Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center said Monday the boy was taken off life support and died Sunday afternoon.
Relatives of 36-year-old Rebecca Schiering called a news conference Monday to mourn the deaths of Schiering and her young son Phillip Schiering. The Spokane County sheriff’s office says both were shot early Sunday in an attack at the woman’s home.
Schiering’s 17-year-old son was attacked with a knife but not seriously injured. The dead 9-year-old’s twin brother was not harmed.
The sheriff’s office says a man believed to be the killer, 39-year-old Jan DeMeerleer, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the garage of his home. Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Reagan says the man had been engaged to the victim at one point.
