EDMONDS — Last year, Seattle artist Judith Caldwell created 12 interpretive markers to inaugurate a walking tour of the city’s downtown area and provide insights into the city’s history and cultural heritage.
Now the city is launching a second art project, installing art work along Fourth Avenue from Main Street to the Edmonds Center for the Arts.
Monday evening, three artists — Iole Alessandrini, John Fleming, and Bruce Myers — will present their ideas for what that project could look like, said Frances Chapin, the city’s arts and culture manager.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Edmonds Conference Center, 201 Fourth Ave. N.
Alessandrini’s work has been displayed at south Lake Union in Seattle, the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner and SeaTac Airport.
Flemming’s public art is installed at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Seattle Center and Lakewood, Colorado.
Myers has undertaken a previous public art project on the Edmonds waterfront and also has worked on public art projects in Federal Way and Bainbridge Island.
The art project is being paid for through a $30,000 grant from the Edmonds Arts Commission and the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation.
“It’s something that’s been of interest to people in the community for many years,” Chapin said. The concept for the project dates back to 2009, when it was proposed as part of a construction upgrade to Fourth Avenue, she said. But those plans were dashed by the recession.
The arts project was raised again in 2013, with suggestions that something could be done to make the corridor more visually interesting. “One of the things people said they would like to see is incorporation of lighting elements in the corridor as art work to light the path,” Chapin said.
The three artists will present their ideas to a selection committee Monday night. That recommendation will be forwarded to the Edmonds Arts Commission and then on to the city council, which is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the project April 21.
Whatever project is approved will be displayed in the public right-of-way. It’s scheduled to be installed this summer.
