3-year-old girl drowns near Sumas

BELLINGHAM — The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says it’s investigating the drowning of a 3-year-old girl in her family’s swimming pool near Sumas.

Sgt. Kevin Mede says the drowning occurred Friday afternoon.

Her mother found the girl at the bottom of the pool about 4 p.m. and performed CPR but was unable to resuscitate the child.

Mede says medics took the child and family members to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, where the girl died.

Mede says the sheriff’s office is investigating the drowning as an accident. Mede did not release the child’s name.
