LAKE STEVENS – About 300 athletes are expected in Lake Stevens on Sunday for the Dannon Triathlon, Duathlon and Danimals dash for kids.
Contestants will hit the water at 7 a.m. for the triathlon and duathlon. The children’s event will follow the two adult events, event coordinator Karen Alessi said.
The triathlon features a 750-meter swim, a 30-kilometer bike ride and a 5-kilometer run. The duathlon features a 5-kilometer run, a 30-kilometer bike ride and a second 5-kilometer run. The Danimals event features a half-mile run, a 5-kilometer bike ride and a second half-mile run.
Last year, about 140 people competed in the events.
“We have had people in town practicing for a month,” Alessi said. “They’re in racing outfits with numbers on them. It’s a dead giveaway. I don’t think I’ve driven the town but a couple of times when I haven’t passed the bicyclists.”
The event is part of a national Dannon series.
Spectators can watch the event from around the lake, although most observers gather near the finish line in the park on Main Street.
About 30 police officers will be on hand to direct traffic, Lake Stevens Police Chief Randy Celori said. Officers will be posted at major intersections.
The city is borrowing officers from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office and other cities. Their services will be paid for by Premier Events, which sponsors the event for Dannon, Celori said.
From 6 a.m. to about noon, portions of two roads will be closed. Main Street will be closed from the 1900 block to 16th Street, but the entrance to the Main Street Center (Jay’s Market) will remain open. The eastbound lane of N. Lakeshore Drive will be closed from Main Street to the city limits.
The city boat launch also will be closed during the same hours.
