FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A four-time Iditarod champion has been arrested for driving under the influence.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported that Lance Mackey also was charged with refusing to take a chemical breath test following his early Sunday morning arrest.
A message left by The Associated Press Monday on Mackey’s cellphone wasn’t immediately returned.
Fairbanks police stopped the 43-year-old Mackey just after 2 a.m. Sunday for speeding and rapid acceleration.
Police say he failed a field sobriety test and registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.147 on a portable test, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08. Police say he later refused a chemical test at the police station.
Mackey posted $3,000 bail after being arraigned Sunday. A hearing was scheduled for July 24.
He won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from 2007-2010.
