OLYMPIA — The Olympia School District says five of its schools have been found to have elevated levels of copper.
The Olympian reported the district issued a release Monday saying the elevated copper levels were discovered in drinking fountains at Garfield, L.P. Brown and Roosevelt elementary schools, Jefferson Middle School and Avanti High School.
District officials say testing is being conducted to determine if the elevated levels are coming from a specific fixture or a building’s pipes.
They say the state doesn’t require water fountains to be shut off for elevated copper, as required for elevated lead levels.
Monday’s announcement comes after neighboring North Thurston Public School District said last week it found elevated lead levels in five schools. The affected fixtures were shut off and bottled drinking water was provided.
