Bail was set at $500,000 Thursday for an Edmonds man accused of first-degree assault in a knifing and stabbing incident early May 27 in the 16100 block of 75th Place W.
Wendell Mitchell Armstead Jr., 23, was charged Wednesday in Snohomish County Superior Court.
The charge contains allegations that Armstead was armed with a deadly weapon and that he committed the assault while serving under state supervision from a previous conviction.
According to court documents, police were sent to the area of the shooting after a neighbor heard what sounded like six gunshots and someone calling for help. A short time later, a young man came to the neighbor’s doorstep seeking aid.
Edmonds police found a man wearing a bloodstained shirt who said he had been shot and stabbed.
The wounded man said that his assailant had driven away in his red 1990 Cadillac Seville, deputy prosecutor Bonnie Tweten said.
The victim told police he had been driving around Edmonds with Armstead and the defendant’s girlfriend. The victim was in the back seat sleeping, woke up to the knife attack and ran away, Tweten said.
As he ran, Armstead came after him with a gun, firing six or seven shots, she added.
The victim was treated for a “significant laceration” to the neck and a bullet wound in his leg, Tweten said.
Seattle police found the Cadillac later that evening while Armstead and another man were cleaning out the car.
Armstead told police he had rented the car from the victim and said he was not even in the Edmonds area at the time of the attack, Tweten said.
The defendant’s girlfriend, however, told police she had been in Edmonds with Armstead and the victim. She said she heard gunshots but did not see a gun or knife, according to documents.
Armstead has previous convictions for rendering criminal assistance in 2004 and first-degree robbery the same year, Tweten said.
