WINLOCK — Veterinarians and volunteers at a Washington wildlife center are caring for seven young bald eagles found critically ill after apparently eating meat from the carcasses of two euthanized horses.
KING-TV reported that Sharon Thomas found the birds last Friday while out walking near Winlock.
Workers at West Sound Wildlife Center believe the birds ate meat from horses euthanized with a strong poison. They say it appears those horses were not properly disposed of, but left to rot where other animals could eat them.
Dr. Alicia Bye said “it’s miraculous” that the eagles made it to the wildlife center.
KING reported that two birds are recovering well. The others are given about a 50-50 chance of survival.
Federal wildlife authorities are investigating since bald eagles are a protected species.
