EDMONDS — Eight teenagers escaped unharmed Saturday morning when a fire broke out at a house during a sleepover.
Fire crews rushed to the one-story home in the 17500 block of 72nd Avenue W. shortly after 11 a.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said. The girls told fire investigators they saw smoke coming from the home’s daylight basement and heard smoke alarms.
More than 30 firefighters responded, Hynes said. “When they arrived, half the house was engulfed, and flames were already through the roof,” she said.
Crews had to attack the blaze from the outside.
The two-alarm fire destroyed the home. Damage was estimated at about $275,000, Hynes said.
No one was injured. Red Cross volunteers responded to help the family renting the home. The homeowners had insurance.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the blaze. Officials were expected to continue the investigation today, Hynes said.
