SPANAWAY — An 81-year-old woman was critically injured in a smoky fire at a Spanaway house where she lived alone.
Central Pierce Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Matt Holm said a sheriff’s deputy responded to a 911 hang-up call before 3 a.m. today and found heavy smoke coming from the house.
Once firefighters got inside they found the woman unconscious. She was taken to St. Clair Hospital in Lakewood.
Holm said there was a working smoke alarm in the house, and it may have alerted the woman.
It appears the fire started in a family room.
The woman’s dog died in the fire.
