TORONTO — A new Ontario law that has targeted youthful speedsters and aggressive drivers has bagged a surprise suspect — an 85-year-old man heading to the bank at 100 mph, officials said.
The man lost his license and Oldsmobile for a week.
Police allege the man was clocked Wednesday along Highway 407 north of Toronto at 40 mph over the posted limit of 60 mph.
“He said he was going to the bank and shopping,” said Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Cam Woolley.
The new legislation affects drivers who exceed the speed limit by at least 31 mph. Most of the 2,300 drivers nabbed since the law kicked in last fall have been in their 20s and 30s. A handful have been senior citizens, but 85 is the oldest so far, police said.
