YAKIMA — A Toppenish gang member was sentenced to 90 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting of a rival gang member.
Yakima Herald-Republic reported that the term handed down Thursday to Fabian Arredondo, 22, was the result of enhanced sentences approved by the Legislature three years ago for gang-related crimes.
Yakima County Deputy Prosecutor Sam Chen said he hopes it sends a message to kids thinking of joining gangs.
Arredondo was convicted of second-degree murder and assault charges in the 2009 shooting of Ladislado Avila.
Prosecutors said Arredondo was not the shooter, but showed the gunman how to switch off the safety and egged him on.
