Navy Cmdr. Dean L. Amsden has been decorated with the Bronze Star for supporting the mission of Operation Enduring Freedom. The medal is awarded to an individual who has performed a heroic act, meritorious achievement or distinguished service during armed conflict or ground combat while engaged against an armed enemy of the United States. Amsden, a chief engineer with 18 years of military service, normally serves in Everett.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Rolf L. Jensen participated in the Army’s Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The three-day competition challenges more than 40 two-man teams in events that test their physical conditioning, Ranger skills and team strategies during back-to-back events in a 60-hour period. Events in the competition include cross-country runs and foot marches with weighted rucksacks, obstacle courses, helicopter parachute jumps, marksmanship events with machine gun and combat pistols, a bayonet assault course, night navigation exercises and other timed and scored events. Jensen is a special forces qualification course instructor assigned to the 1st Special Warfare Training Group, Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C. He is the son of Daniel Jensen of Mukilteo and Darlienne Jensen of Olympia.
Mathew J. Hicks, son of retired Marine Corps Master Sgt. Jeffrey Hicks and Marine Corps Reserve Col. Lynn Hicks of Clinton, recently participated in the U.S. Naval Academy’s week-long summer seminar program in Annapolis, Md. Hicks attends South Whidbey High School.
Jason E. Belvill has graduated from the Preparatory School at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., with an appointment to the enter the Air Force Academy. He is the son of Roger Belvill of Bothell and Jackie Cho of Woodinville.
