Air Force Airman Tamiko P. Smith graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter of Timothy Smith of Fallon, Nev., and Yumi Smith of Oak Harbor. Smith is a 2008 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.

Army Staff Sgt. Derek E. Stivers has returned to Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska, after a year-long deployment to Afghanistan. The soldier is one of 3,500 members of the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Richardson. The soldiers worked to improve roads, provide vocational training in construction and civics, improve and reopen 29 schools, remodel six medical clinics and improved three district courthouses. While deployed in Afghanistan, Stivers was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Stivers, a fire support sergeant with eight years of military service, is regularly assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment. The sergeant graduated in 1999 from Arlington High School. He is the son of Brian Stivers of Marysville and Mary Elliot of Kenmore. His wife, Jenna, is the daughter of Barry Galde of Marysville.

Army 2nd Lt. Luke L. Fletcher has graduated from Army Basic Officer Leader Course III. Graduates are prepared and readied to lead small units upon arrival at their first assignment. Fletcher is an armor officer assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox, Ky. He is the son of Jim and Nancy Fletcher of Arlington. The lieutenant graduated in 2005 from Arlington High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2009 from Whitworth University in Spokane.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael C. Foster, son of Konda Kearton of Langley, is assigned to San Diego-based, Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which recently received the Battle Efficiency Ribbon given to the most battle-ready carrier in the Pacific fleet. Foster is a 1997 graduate of South Whidbey High School. He joined the Navy in 1997.

Navy Seaman Norrick T. Burton, son of Tonjia Dennis of Memphis, Tenn., and Norrick Burton of Marysville, is assigned to San Diego-based, Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which recently received the Battle Efficiency Ribbon given to the most battle-ready carrier in the Pacific fleet. Burton joined the Navy in 2008.

Army Reserve Pfc. George M. Schweigert has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is the son of George and Shelly Schweigert of Arlington, and is a 2006 graduate of Lakewood High School.

Army Spec. Nathan R. Schornak has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is the son of Barbara Schornak of Everett, and graduated in 2001 from Mariner High School, Everett. He earned a master’s degree in 2009 from Central Washington University.

Army Pvt. Kyle R. Brown has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of JoAnn Brown of Snohomish, and is a 2006 graduate of Monroe High School.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class John M. Knight graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Knight is the grandson of Gwenn Knight of Langley.
