Rescue workers leap to their feet after an aftershock in Beichuan, southwestern China’s Sichuan province, on Monday. A televised government warning of a major aftershock sent thousands of panicked survivors running into the darkened streets Monday night, a week after a powerful quake killed at least 34,000 people and injured about 250,000. In shattered Sichuan province, residents carried pillows, blankets and chairs from homes into the open or slept in cars after a warning that there was a “rather great” chance of an aftershock measuring magnitude 6 to 7. Such jolts could cause major damage. Also on Monday, China paused to mourn the tens of thousands of quake victims.
