An aging ex-convict who served time in prison for a murder nearly 30 years ago was charged with felony assault Tuesday for allegedly using a metal bar to club pursuers who spotted him trying to steal items from a car in Everett on Dec. 19.
Charles James Broussard, 62, of Everett was spotted in the back of a car, and he fled when its owner and others gave chase, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor John Adcock said.
The pursuers caught Broussard as he tried to climb a fence, and that is when he allegedly began striking them with a pry bar, Adcock said.
One pursuer received a deep cut to his head, exposing his skull. Broussard was wrestled to the ground and held for police.
He is charged with third-degree assault and jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail.
His criminal history includes auto theft and first-degree murder. Court records show that in 1973 Broussard fatally shot a woman in Seattle. The victim managed to shoot him before she died, and the bullet, recovered at the hospital, became a key piece of evidence against him.
Broussard tried, and failed, to keep the bullet from being used against him at trial. He unsuccessfully argued the physician-patient relationship was violated when his doctor turned the bullet over to detectives.
