JUNEAU, Alaska — The Senate State Affairs committee has considered a bill that would tie the expiration dates of a person’s visa and driver’s license.
Alaska American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Jeffrey Mittman says the bill unnecessarily mixes immigration law with the Division of Motor Vehicle’s duties. And he says it could undermine equal protections for legal immigrants.
The bill, sponsored by Anchorage Republican Rep. Bob Lynn, would allow the division to issue driver’s licenses for the duration of a person’s visa, or, in the case of a legal immigrant staying indefinitely, for one year.
Currently, the division issues driver’s licenses for five years.
The bill passed the House in February.
The committee held the bill for future consideration.
