JUNEAU, Alaska — A lookout on a state ferry heard an injured hiker’s faint cry for help and crew members rescued him from a rocky beach near Skagway.
Malaspina Capt. Nick Kollars told the Juneau Empire that the vessel Thursday night was approaching the Skagway harbor when lookout Roger Sperber heard cries for help.
The vessel turned around and passengers were asked to scan the shoreline.
Another crew member eventually spotted 33-year-old Joey Nowiki, a Skagway seasonal worker. The ferry sent its fast rescue boat to pick him up.
Rescue personnel said Nowiki apparently tumbled down a cliff, landed in the water and swam to shore.
The ferry crew found him bleeding from head wounds and body cuts.
He was treated and released from a Skagway clinic.
