A smoke alarm alerted a man to a fire in his home at about 12:15 a.m. Friday, Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.
The man, who lives alone, was able to escape without injury from his two-story home in the 700 block of Edmonds Way, Hynes said.
Firefighters contained the flames to a small area in front of the living room fireplace, Hynes said.
The fire marshal determined the accidental blaze began after burning logs rolled out of the fireplace, Hynes said. The fire caused $28,000 in damage.
The fire underscored the need for smoke alarms, Hynes said.
The district will mark Smoke Alarm Saturday this weekend, as firefighters help residents check the batteries in their alarms, Hynes said.
