HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – An American sailor in Canada for a training exercise was killed Saturday in an early morning brawl outside a downtown Halifax nightclub.
The 28-year-old sailor was found with stab wounds on a trendy street lined with bars, restaurants and shops. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Another U.S. sailor was slightly injured and hospitalized.
U.S. Navy spokesman Cmdr. Herman Phillips said the slain sailor was stationed on the USS Doyle, one of two American naval vessels in Halifax for exercises with the Canadian navy. He said the sailor’s name would not be released until the family was notified. The USS Doyle’s home port is Mayport, Fla.
Around 4 a.m., police responded to a fight involving about 20 people, which apparently started inside the club and spilled onto the street. Police said six people from the Halifax area were in custody, but none had been charged.
