EVERETT — Teens from around the county will get to stay up all night and not get into trouble for it.
The Everett Boys &Girls Club next Friday is organizing a sleepover for teens from Everett to Mukilteo.
There will be pizza, basketball, prizes, board games and dancing, said Candice Dennis, the club’s teen director.
“It’s just something positive for them to do,” Dennis said. “They always complain to me that there is nothing for them to do.”
The doors will close at 9 p.m. and won’t open again until 6 in the morning, Dennis said. The teens will be safe with three staff members.
The club also arranged for a police officer to be present.
The event is open for people ages 13 to 18, and those under 18 are required to bring permission slips from their parents or guardians, Dennis said.
Staying up all night holds a special meaning for almost every teenager, Dennis said.
“They are going to do it anyway,” Dennis laughed. “They must be feeling some kind of independence. They really don’t like the idea of curfew.”
The sleepover event isn’t the only thing young men and women can look forward to, Dennis said. The club boasts a special hangout for teens where they can play ping-pong and pool, surf the Web, study or just relax with friends on one of the couches.
A couple dozen teens can be found hanging out at the center any afternoon, and it’s a diverse group, the club’s program director Diana Murphy said.
The club is expecting to greet more than 60 teens for the sleepover, and Murphy said she is looking forward to seeing new faces.
“I’m looking forward to see how the community comes together,” she said.
The event will provide an opportunity for young people to welcome and get to know each other, Murphy said. “I want them all to extend a helping hand to each other… and see what the community has to offer.”
