MARYSVILLE — The signs are ready.
They always are. Year after year at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
The paper signs are on display above tables packed with books, clothes, linens and various kitchen items at the annual Gym Sale. There, shoppers can find the price of the items they are looking to buy from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.
Proceeds from the Gym Sale at 7215 51st Ave. NE in Marysville help fund the senior high youth group’s summer mission trips. This year, a group of 12 boys and girls in the ninth through 12th grades will spend a week in Shoshone, Idaho, at an Idaho Servant Adventures Camp.
The group doesn’t know exactly how they will spend the week in July yet, said Wendie Jones, a church member who works with the youth group. But they can plan on doing some hard work during the trip, she said.
“They do various kinds of manual labor,” Jones said. “It’s different all the time.”
The students might help with yard work, do house projects, split wood and perform other tasks to prepare for this year’s fall and winter, said Ryan Brown, director of Youth and Family Ministry at the church.
“They will serve families and individuals in the River Valley who need assistance,” he said.
Last summer the church youth group painted houses and taught vacation Bible school at Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning, Mont.
“It was really eye-opening for the students to go and it was a great way for them to give something back,” Jones said.
Donations for the sale came from church members and people in the community. The sale typically raises $2,500 and funds a portion of the overall cost of youth members’ mission trips.
This year’s sale features bikes, furniture, exercise equipment, a foosball table, ski equipment and other sporting goods, Jones said. At the end of the sale, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., people can shop the Buck-A-Bag sale and fill plastic grocery bags with items for a dollar.
Any donations that are left after the sale are donated to Saint Joseph’s House in Marysville.
“We really don’t have anything expensive,” Jones said. “It’s about getting the items out.”
