Students hold pet food drive
Students from Immaculate Conception Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Everett recently donated pet food and supplies to the Everett City Animal Shelter.
The pet food drive was conducted by students in Mary Jo Burk’s 5A classroom.
The entire school donated three full carts of food from May 1 to 14.
Lorraine Burns’ 3A classroom collected the most donations out of all the classes and won an ice cream social.
Group gives grant to Matthew House
Catholic Daughters of the Americas St. Rita Court 957 of Everett recently presented a $800 grant to Matthew House, an organization in Monroe that provides help to families of those who are incarcerated.
Linda Poz, director of Matthew House, accepted the grant on April 23 from members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas St. Rita Court in Everett.
$20,000 for Forest Park playground
The Rotary Club of Everett gave $20,000 to the Everett Parks Department on May 25 for construction of the Rotary Centennial Water Playground at Forest Park.
This was the second Rotary Club visit in two weeks for Jeff Price, business manager for Everett Parks, who received the contribution from Rotary Club President Kevin Morris. Price also visited the club on May 18, when his daughter, Amanda, received a $5,000 scholarship.
The club committed $100,000 to the water playground project in 2006 to recognize and honor the 100th anniversary of the Rotary.
Club president Lyle Ryan coordinated the water playground project. The recent payment was the fourth installment of five payments.
Safeco awards grant to Housing Hope
Housing Hope, a housing and services agency in Everett, recently received a $20,000 grant from the Safeco Insurance Foundation.
The grant will help maintain a comprehensive service package for homeless families who live in their shelter and transitional housing program.
The comprehensive package includes case management, employment services and an adult life skills training program.

County residents win scholarships
The Zonta Club of Everett recently presented Women In Transition Scholarships to two Snohomish County residents.
Scholarship winners Rebecca Hallett and Jennifer Pena each received $1,500 to assist with educational expenses.
Hallett is a single mother who is attending college to earn her associate in technical arts degree in accounting. She plans to continue on to earn her bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Pena is also a single mother, whose child was born very prematurely. As a result of this experience, Pena’s goal is to become a registered nurse and eventually work in a neonatal intensive care unit with premature babies.
Both women received a certificate of recognition at the annual Zonta Installation Dinner on May 20 at Everett Golf and Country Club.
Zonta of Everett is a non-profit club which is a part of Zonta International.
Three students win essay contest
Three eighth-graders from St. Mary Magdalen Parish and School in Everett recently received awards for their entries in an essay contest sponsored by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas St. Rita Court in Everett.
Students essays titled, “How have priests influenced my life?” were presented on May 12 by the Rev. Hans Olson of St. Mary Magdalen Parish and Mary Gregoire, Pat Oshie, and Dorothy Preder of St. Rita Court.
Student Max Barr won first place and was awarded $50; Dana Tran won $30 for placing second and Vayle Barela received $20 for third place.
