New mural unveiled at Camano park

A new 200-square-foot mural at Terry’s Corner was unveiled Feb. 1 at Camano Gateway Park. There were musical performances and speeches. Nearly 300 people attended.

The mural was designed by artist Danny Koffman and made by 29 Camano Island artists, who combined to create the mural’s 48 square segments. Digitally stitched together, the completed mural forms a giant map of Camano Island.

Artists involved in the project included Ray Fossum, John Ebner, Helen Saunders, Dotti Burton, Dale LeMaster, Molly LeMaster, Sally Chang, Lee Beitz, Mary Simmons, Kathy Dannerbeck, Marie-Claire Dole, Karla Matzke, Frank Renlie, Betty Dorotik, Chris Tuohy, Jack Gunter, Roger Cocke, Opal Cocke, Nicki Wight, Michele Rushworth, Linda Demetre, Liz Hamlin, Susan Cohen Thompson, Chain Bezalel-Levy, Yonnah Bezalel-Levy, Mark Ellinger, Danny Koffman, Nikki Yamamoto and Suki Guzinski.

Students serve lawmakers as pages

Alice McIntyre, an Everett homeschool student, served as a page the first week of February in the state House of Representatives. She was sponsored by state Rep. Mike Sells, D-Everett. “I’ve always taken an interest in civics,” McIntyre said. “I’m very grateful to serve as a House Page while learning firsthand how our state government works.”

Anthony Monteleone, an eighth-grader at St. Michael’s Catholic School in Snohomish, served as a page in the Washington State Senate during the second week of the 2016 Legislative Session. Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, sponsored Monteleone’s week in the Legislature. “It was really interesting and fun,” Monteleone said. “I felt like I was really a part of this place.”

Pages assist lawmakers and staff, hear lectures, attend a page school where they create their own bills in a mock committee setting, and more.
