2,500 toothbrushes mean clean teeth
The Snohomish County Dental Foundation recently donated 2,500 sets of toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss to Assistance League of Everett.
The dental supplies are distributed, along with new school clothing, to children in need who go to Operation School Bell, Assistance League’s major philanthropic program.
The donations from the Snohomish County Dental Foundation means that for the past 12 years each child that comes to Operation School Bell has been given a toothbrush, paste and floss.
Elks donate books to Tulalip kids
Members of the Everett Elks Lodge 479 recently provided dictionaries to third-grade students at Tulalip Elementary School.
Fifth-grade students read reviews written by Elks members of new books and chose their favorites before 61 books were purchased.
A new-book party was held for the students who browsed through the new books, each with bookplates with the name of the child who chose that story. The books were purchased with money from a grant from the Elks National Foundation.
Assistance dog shows how it’s done
Members at a recent Everett Port Gardner Rotary Club breakfast meeting were told not to feed the keynote speaker, who was under the table waiting to be called.
Titus, a Summit Assistance dog, and his trainer, Lisa Freshour, showed members how assistance dogs can turn lights on and off, and pick up a dropped telephone receiver and car keys and return them to people.
Titus, a golden retriever, is one of eight dogs being trained at the nonprofit organization. Since 2000, Summit has placed 42 assistance-dog teams and rescued more than 150 homeless dogs from animal shelters.
Movie passes for foster kids
Edmonds Lutheran Church recently donated movie passes to Compass Health’s Foster Care Program.
The movie passes are used by foster children and their foster families so that they can go to the movies together. The children receive full-time or weekend foster care through Compass Health.
