Dairy superintendent honored by fair

Longtime dairy cattle superintendent Ellene Kearney was honored recently by the members of the Evergreen State Fair Advisory Board with a special award.

Kearney has served the Evergreen State Fair as dairy superintendent for the past 27 years.

The Dairy Division also received the prestigious Black and White Award from the Washington State Fair Commission, as well as a special award for educational displays.

Employees benefit Salvation Army

The Salvation Army of Everett and Snohomish County recently received a donation of $5,639 from the Employees Community Fund of the Boeing Co.

Presented on behalf of current and retired Boeing employees, the gift will help Snohomish County residents in need.

Stanwood scouts attend jamboree

Eight high school-age Girl Scouts from Stanwood Troop 3026 attended the Minnesota Dreams International Girl Scout Jamboree in Minneapolis, Minn., in July.

Emily Harris, Sarah Martinez, Jenni Gangloff, Maggie Chappel, Shayla Nawrocki, Ashley Ryan, Kaylee Muriekes, Leah Bowman participated in a service project that helped a teen shelter there, toured the region and attended a variety of classes at St. Olaf College.

To make the 11-day trip, the girls ran Scout badge workshops, held car washes, wrapped gifts and sold concessions.

Forty &Eight awards scholarships

Snohomish County Voiture 505 of the Forty &Eight has awarded three scholarships to nursing students at Everett Community College.

Suzanne Bliss-Ruiz, Kari Bement and Joanna Mueller received $500 scholarships from the organization.

The Forty &Eight is the honor society of the American Legion. Local members are from posts throughout Snohomish County.

Cheer squad to lend pep to game

The Lake Stevens Junior Athletic Association Cheer Squad has volunteered to cheer at a Little League football game and pep rally set for Saturday at Husky Stadium on the University of Washington campus.

The game, between two small teams from the coast, Forks and Neah Bay, is slated to be played prior to the UW game against Ohio State University.

When cheer coach Janice Hyatt learned that the Little League game lacked cheerleaders, she and her squad of 18 middle school-age girls agreed to help out.

The Little League game is arranged annually by Forks resident Oly Archibald.

Everett woman earns national award

Tami Wagoner of Everett, president of the state Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, recently was named outstanding president of the year during the auxiliary’s national convention in Kansas City, Mo.

Wagoner, a member of Walter A. Deebach Auxiliary No. 1040, was honored for her leadership during the 2006-07 service year.

Group gives $15,000 in scholarships

Everett Redmen Lodge, Pilchuck Tribe 42, awarded 15 $1,000 scholarships in 2007 to students in nursing, math, teaching and veterinary studies.

“The members of the lodge are proud of the investment in the young people who receive the scholarships,” Bob Monize said.

Everett alum is top anthropologist

Jerry Melbye, a member of the Everett High School class of 1954, recently analyzed 22 mummies in the central Mexican silver-mining town of Guanajuato, which has been named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The mummies are part of a collection of 111, the remains of people who died in the middle of the 19th century.

Melbye, a professor at Texas State University at San Marcos, is considered to be one of the country’s leading forensic anthropologists.

He has studied ancient mummies in Egypt and Colorado and on Vancouver Island, B.C.

Old Bags awards fundraising prize

The Old Bags of Arlington women’s club recently ran a raffle to benefit children in the Arlington School District. The group donates annually to athletic teams and other groups.

Winner of the raffle is Sedro-Woolley resident Judi Wagoner, who won $400.

Plante wins top awards with her plant

Megan Plante, 11, of Bothell, recently was named the winner of the youth division at the Sno-King Fuchsia Society’s annual show.

The daughter of Tony and Shawn Plante, Megan grew a fuchsia on her backyard patio. The plant earned best in class, best of section and best in division awards at the show.

The fuchsia society meets at 7:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month, Good Shepherd Church, 6915 196th St. SW, Lynnwood.

Christmas House receives donation

Cory Long, co-owner of the Judd &Black appliance company, recently presented a $10,000 check to Christmas House board members and a $2,000 check to the North Everett Boys &Girls Club.

The donations were made at the conclusion of the company’s annual charity golf tournament.

Co-chairs named for diabetes walk

Scott Laigo and Heidi Ferguson have been named the co-chairmen of the upcoming “Step Out To Fight Diabetes” fundraising event.

The annual walk is set for 8 a.m. Oct. 6 beginning at the Tulalip Amphitheater in Marysville. Plans call for entertainment, speakers and information booths at the event.

More than 600 walkers are expected to help raise awareness and funds for diabetes research. The disease is suffered by more than 30,000 adults in Snohomish County, said Mark Johnson, American Diabetes Association director in the county.
