Mar Tobiason of Snohomish has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Tobiason has been a Red Cross volunteer since 1998.
Other officers elected at the chapter’s 91st annual meeting on June 21 were Tim Serban, first vice president; Dr. Steve Dahlberg, second vice president; Pat Sisneros, treasurer-finance; Leslie Hynes, secretary; Al Aldrich, nomination-governance; Eric Sprink, financial development; and LeAnne Frank, finance.
Elected to their first terms on the board of directors were Mark McClure of Ragen MacKenzie, Randy Utt of the Everett Fire Department, Chad Stefonowicz of Premera Blue Cross, Chris Prock of Bank of America, Jim Davis of Fluke Corp. and Barbara Fugleberg of Group Health Cooperative.
Board members elected to a second term are Paul Smith of the Boeing Co., Leslie Hynes of Fire District 1 and Dr. Steve Dahlberg of the Everett Clinic.
Edmonds Girl Scout earns Gold Award
Megan Elizabeth Gourlie, 18, of Edmonds has earned her Gold Award, the Girl Scout equivalent of the Boy Scout Eagle rank.
The daughter of Julie and Allan Gourlie, Megan is a 2007 graduate of Meadowdale High School, where she was involved in student government, sports and music. She graduated with honors and plans to attend nursing school at Seattle University.
She joined the Girl Scouts while in kindergarten. She has been a volunteer camp counselor, among other volunteer activities.
For her Gold Award volunteer project, Megan donated 125 children’s blankets to Matthew House, a nonprofit ministry that helps families who have loved ones in prison in Monroe. She raised money for the project and got help from friends and classmates in constructing the blankets.
Piece Makers donate hundreds of quilts
The Piece Makers quilting group of Advent Lutheran Church in Everett has made and donated hundreds of quilts during the past six years.
The group’s members, who sew the quilts from bits and pieces of cloth, donate them primarily to the Lutheran World Relief organization.
They also have donated quilts locally and to national charitable organizations.
The group meets two afternoons each month to meet their quilting goals.
The Advent Lutheran Church Piece Makers include Cora Evans, Lottie Dickerman, Marty Evans, Marie Freeman, Judi Johnson, Ginny Knorr, Sherri Kuhnhenn, Mary Lindholm, Betty McCann, Myrtis Reed, Arlin Reid and Norma Spencer.
Red Cross honors county volunteers
More than 100 Red Cross volunteers, employees and guests attended the Snohomish County Chapter’s annual volunteer recognition dinner June 27 at the Chapter House in Everett.
Mar Tobiason of Snohomish was presented the chapter’s Glassberg Award, the highest award that can be given to a local chapter volunteer in recognition of outstanding Red Cross service in areas of performance, diversity and commitment.
Tobiason has been a Red Cross volunteer since 1998. In addition to her duties as chairman of the chapter’s board of directors, Tobiason volunteers as a chapter Disaster Action Team member, responding to local disasters such as house fires during after-business hours, on weekends and on holidays. She also performs Red Cross relief work as a volunteer during national disasters, most recently to help at Gulf Coast areas hit by Hurricane Katrina. Her day-to-day volunteer work includes serving as a chapter public affairs officer.
Five-year volunteer Red Cross service awards were presented to Lyla, Anderson, Trygve Anderson, James Buchanan, Ed Empey, Cindy Empey, Jeff Foster, Pat LaJambe and Paul Smith. Awards recognizing 10 years of service went to Mary Fox and Bev Riter. Fifteen-year service awards were given to Beth Budbill-Atkins, Gene Budbill, Jon Budbill, Liz Budbill and Andy Hamack. Rick Fuhrman was honored for serving Red Cross for 25 years and a 40-year award went to John Fisken.
Department outstanding performance awards were given to Jerri Watkins, Armed Forces Emergency Services Bea Mansker Memorial Award; in health and safety, John Maddock, aquatic safety, and Sarah Newman, all-around volunteer; in support services, Hunter MacKay.
Disaster Services awards went to Trygve Anderson, volunteer leadership; Andi Anzelmo, mass care feeding; Liz Budbill, training; Bill Burns, government liaison; Don Eager, warehousing and supply; Andy Hamack, disaster services chairman; Kimberly MacArthur, disaster services human resource coordinator; Judy Pearson, instructor; Julie Reymore, client services; Jack Robinson, community partner services; Margaret Smith, nurses lead, Chuck Tudor, information management.
Recipients of the Chairman’s Award for exceptional service as members of the chapter’s board of directors were Paul Smith and Leslie Hynes. Nancy Holiman was recognized for her six years as a board member, two as chairman.
The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross has been a community resource for 91 years. This year it was recognized as one of the top performing chapters among the more than 700 Red Cross chapters nationwide.
Everett Central Lions Club installs officers
Troy Woodard has been installed as president of the Everett Central Lions Club. Woodard is a longtime Everett resident and a Scott Paper retiree.
Other officers recently installed are Merry Goshorn, first vice president; Mark Johnson, second vice president; and Gary Councilman, secretary-treasurer. Directors are Karst Brandsma, Linda Beecher, Bridget Larson, Jim Horton, Randy Wood and Art Ruben. Fred Sirianni was installed as Tail Twister and Chuck Patten as Lion Tamer. Ken Beecher is the immediate past president.

Grant helps league help teen students
Assistance League of Everett recently received a $5,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to help provide clothing to high school students from low-income families.
The Retail Teen Program, an extension of the Assistance League’s Operation School Bell, allows high school students to choose their own clothing through a partnership with Fred Meyer stores. During the last school year, 378 students from 11 Snohomish County high schools shopped at Fred Meyer. Assistance League is expanding the program to all of the high schools in the 14 school districts served by Operation School Bell. New school wardrobes also were provided to 2,436 children at the School Bell facility.
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s $5,000 donation will provide an opportunity for more than 30 students to participate in the clothing program.
Clinic foundation awards donations
The Everett Clinic Foundation provides philanthropic support to charitable organizations in Snohomish County. The foundation has announced the following recent donations:
The Boys &Girls Club of Snohomish County was awarded $10,000 for its Kid’s Cafe program; the Arts Council of Snohomish County was awarded a $5,000 grant for its Art Alternatives for Youth at Risk program; Providence Hospice and Home Care of Snohomish County received a grant of $16,000 for its Carousel Bereavement Program for grieving youth; and Christmas House received $8,500 to purchase warm clothing, toys, teen gifts and household essentials.
Catholic Community Services-Northwest was awarded $7,500 for Helpers of People with AIDS; Everett Public Schools Foundation will use a $5,000 grant to help support low-income students who cannot afford to pay the full tuition to attend summer school; Everett Community College Foundation was awarded $25,500 to fund 17 scholarships for students in health science programs; and Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic was awarded $25,000 to support the ongoing work of providing basic medical care for people who have had difficulty gaining access to health care providers.
Since 1994, the Everett Clinic Foundation has donated more than $2 million to charitable organizations in Snohomish County. Each year, Everett Clinic staff and physicians collectively contributed more than $125,000 through personal contributions to support the ongoing work of the Everett Clinic Foundation.
Sheriff’s Explorer Scout wins top honors
Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Scout Tanya Kaczka was recently named 2006 Explorer of the Year by the Washington Law Enforcement Exploring Advisors, a sub-committee of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs.
Kaczka was a sheriff’s office Explorer for five years, serving part of that time as its captain until August when she left to complete her bachelor’s degree at Washington State University. She currently is a law enforcement technician at the sheriff’s office and hopes to become a deputy. Kaczka volunteered more than 400 hours as an Explorer and is recognized for organizing numerous events, recruiting new Explorers and offering to help other police agencies start their own Explorer programs.
The Explorer program adds supports to the sheriff’s office while offering young people between the ages of 14 and 20 the opportunity to determine whether to pursue a career in law enforcement.
The Washington Law Enforcement Exploring Advisors also has awarded a scholarship to Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Shane Yoshizawa.
Yoshizawa has been an Explorer Scout since 2005 and has participated on behalf of the explorer post in community events that include DUI Awareness, the local Youth Meth Summit and National Night Out Against Crime. He has donated hundreds of hours of time, and is the leader of the Sheriff’s Office Explorer Honor Guard.
Yoshizawa plans to attend Everett Community College.
Marysville names poster contest winner
Nathan Neisinger, a second-grader at Grace Academy is the grand prize winner of the Marysville Fire Department’s poster contest. His “F is for Firefighter” poster drawing features a firefighter who has just rescued a child from a burning building.
A few years ago, Nathan, was burned in a kitchen accident at a neighbor’s house. He spent three months in an intensive care unit and has undergone several surgeries since.
As a surprise on the day of the poster award, the fire department arranged for the firefighters who had tended to Nathan after the accident to help recognize him for his efforts in the fire safety poster contest. Firefighter/paramedics Mirco Piazzi and Russell Bennet along with officer Travis Hots, Marysville Mayor Dennis Kendall, Grace Academy principal Tim Lugg and fire Chief Greg Corn were on hand to honor the boy.
Lynnwood students build house for Rotary
The Edmonds School District Carpentry Building Construction Program has almost finished its 33rd student-built house.
The program, which includes juniors and seniors from the Edmonds, Northshore and Shoreline school districts has built the new 2,149-square-foot home located at 20717 56th Ave. W. in Lynnwood.
Program teachers Jenny Wachter and Scott Hammond had volunteer help from one of the program’s former instructors, Randy Riddle.
Each year, with help of Lynnwood Rotary Club members, a piece of land is found and used for the house construction. Next year’s house will be built at 172nd Street and 34th Avenue W. in Lynnwood, said Lynnwood Rotarian Chris Sheehan, who has typically found the properties to be built on in the past.
Lynnwood Rotary honors the teachers and students with a monetary prize and also gives prizes to the top students. This year each student and teachers received a $100 bill, a $5,000 total.
The top prizes, gifts of tools and other equipment were given to eight top students, Rolondo Beurcill, Spencer Jacobson, Jon Lee, Britt Murray, Nigel Nagel, Josh Ratcliff, Aaron Reynolds and Griffin Scheurer.
