The Marysville chapter of Binky Patrol, a nationwide organization that makes blankets for children, will participate in National Make a Difference Day. The group plans to sew from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Hilton Lake Fire Station. The quilts made that day will go to hospitals and foster-care organizations.

Members of the Marysville chapter include Heather Bolm, Marty Brundige, Ursula Denison, Naomi Gatterman, Gwen Goss, Nancy Gribble, Lisa House, Colleen Lane, Wendy Lato, Bonni Mattson, Karen Morse, Ernalee Munday, Nancy Ness, Sylvia Ostler, Linda Rudolph, Carol Strack, Nancy Tschida and Barbara Wood. The group recently made and delivered 833 quilts and 272 stocking caps to social service agencies throughout Snohomish County.

The group is looking for new members as well as donations of fabric, thread, backing and yarn. For information, call 360-659-7198.

Church’s rest stop aids Sultan Food Bank

The Church of Our Saviour Episcopal in Monroe recently set up its rest stop at the Gold Bar Family Grocery. The annual event offers coffee and cookies and brings in donations for food banks. This year, $800 and 293 pounds of groceries were given to the Sultan Food Bank.

The food bank serves about 150 families each week. Food distribution hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 9:30 a.m. to noon Fridays. Donations may be mailed to the Sultan Food Bank, 703 First St., Sultan, WA 98294.

The food bank needs weekday volunteers who can drive the food bank truck to pick up bulk food items at area warehouses. Call 360-793-8609 to volunteer.

Spanish-speakers win health scholarships

Elgar Calderon of Mountlake Terrace and Luis Acevedo of Granite Falls have each won $2,000 scholarships from the United Health Foundation and the PacifiCare Foundation.

The scholarships were awarded nationally to 75 Spanish-speaking students pursuing careers in health care. The scholarship program addresses the nationwide shortage of Spanish-speaking health-care professionals, foundation spokesmen said.

Calderon attends Shoreline Community College and Acevedo is a student at the University of Washington.

Zonta Club of Everett honored at seminar

Judith Strand, past president of the Zonta Club of Everett, attended the recent Zonta International District 8 Governor’s Seminar in Victoria, B.C.

The club received nine awards, including the 2006 Local Service Award for its focus on homeless women and mothers, women in transition and displaced homemakers, as well as its work to improve the health, education and economic and professional status of women in Snohomish County.

Chris Rommel of Edmonds will be honored Thursday by the Zonta Club of Everett, District 8 and Zonta International for her 30 years of service to the organization and her community.

Bart elected president of officials association

Snohomish County Sheriff Rick Bart recently was elected the 50th president of the Washington Association of County Officials for the 2006-07 term. Bart has been a member of the association’s board of trustees since 1998.

The Washington Association of County Officials is a nonprofit organization that provides its members with research assistance, training, lobbying services and a forum for discussing issues of common interest to counties. The association’s membership includes assessors, auditors, superior court clerks, coroners, prosecuting attorneys, sheriffs and treasurers from the state’s 39 counties.

Snohomish sewing group finishes projects

The Snohomish Senior Center’s sewing program, with 15 active members, has finished a number of projects since its formation in March.

The group has sewn wheelchair lap quilts, walker pockets, teddy bears, rag dolls, Christmas stockings and tote bags. They were given to nursing homes, hospitals, community service organizations and county and state programs for children.

One 96-year-old senior has made 28 wheelchair lap quilts, and another member has completed 35 quilts. Yet another member has made 82 Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and 40 teddy bears.

Members include Jo Kinkade, Anita Gay, Evelyn Robertson, Doris Sedenius, Burma Felton, Joedie Fraser, Marcia O’Hair, Barbara McManus, Virginia Wickstrom, LaVerne Slattum, Joanne Hiersch, Susan Satrom, Rose Johnson, Louise Hoops, Diana Johnston, Marilyn Marzolf, Tom Gray, Roxanne McKinnon, Judi Smith, Ellie Crowder and Karen Richards.

The program welcomes new volunteers. The sewing group meets from 1 to 3 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at the Snohomish Senior Center, located on the lower level of St. Michael’s Church.

EvCC receives $3,000 to fund scholarships

Everett Community College has received $3,000 from the Windermere Foundation to provide scholarships for low-income students with children. Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this school year.

The gift will help the Everett Community College Foundation reach its goal of doubling the number of EvCC scholarships during the next five years. The foundation awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships during the 2005-06 school year.
