Dean’s List: Emily Yin Chu and Mary Labib, both of Everett, are on the Dean’s List at Washington University in Missouri.

Who’s who: Jong Kwan Park, Mill Creek, a junior at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, is listed in the 2004 edition of "Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

Poster contest winners: Students Gabriella Axelson of Seattle Hill Elementary School, Brionna Keller of Cathcart Elementary and Jake Reichard of Totem Falls Elementary won Snohomish County Fire District 1’s fire prevention week poster contest.

Students were asked to draw a poster depicting the Fire Prevention Week theme: "When Fire Strikes: Get Out and Stay Out!"

The three contest winners will get to be firefighter for a day, which includes riding on a fire truck, pulling a hose and squirting water with firefighters, lunch with the crew and a souvenir photo.

Firefighters earn certification: Snohomish County Fire District 1 firefighters Duffy Burns, NaDean Reinertsen, Steve Wheeler and public information assistant Kate Bogh have received certification as child passenger safety technicians. District 1 now has seven employees who are certified.

Firefighter promoted: Snohomish County Fire District 1 has promoted firefighter Andy Speier to captain. Speier is the technical rescue team coordinator for District 1.

Teacher certified: Stacey Barton-Lagerwey, a 1990 graduate of Lynnwood High School and 1997 graduate of Western Washington University in Bellingham, is one of 8,195 elementary and second school teachers nationwide who achieved National Board Certification in 2003.

Barton-Lagerwey teaches kindergarten through sixth grade physical education at Central Elementary in Sedro-Woolley. She has been a teacher for seven years and holds a degree in K-12 physical education and a master’s degree in adult education.

ROTC competition: Snohomish High School students picked up numerous awards at the first competition in the Northwest Junior ROTC Drill and Rifle conference for the 2003-04 season.

Everett High School hosted the event, and 12 schools competed Saturday.

The Snohomish High Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, under the direction of Senior Marine Instructor Col. John Mack and Marine Instructor Sgt. Maj. Reid Zachary, placed high.

Snohomish students placed in the following categories: Armed Drill placed first, unarmed placed second. Color Guard 1 placed first, Color Guard 2 placed second, and the rifle team won third.

Cmdr. Dan Russell of the Armed Drill team placed third in the Drill Team Commander categories. Unarmed Drill team Staff Sgt. Tamra Hill placed fourth. Individual Armed Drill, 1st Sgt. Jon Guncay won first place. Dual, Armed Cmdr. Dan Russell and 1st. Lt. Ryan Summers also took first, and the rifle team placed third. Unarmed Drill down Pvt. Jody Schwisow won second. Armed Drill down Staff Sgt. Crystal Davis placed sixth.
