Class project helps children in need
Konley Roberts, a fifth-grader at Emerson Elementary School in Everett, recently took advantage of a class project for Make a Difference Day.
He solicited his neighbors to collect winter hats and gloves that he donated to Assistance League’s Operation School Bell for children in need in Everett.
Operation School Bell provides school clothing for low-income children from 14 school districts in Snohomish County.
Firefighters help Santa arrive at event
Snohomish County Fire District 1 firefighters made sure Santa Claus arrived safely at their Lake Serene Fire Station neighborhood party on Dec. 12.
On the way to the annual party Santa always seems to have a mishap that requires the aid of firefighters, and this year was no exception.
About 45 children and their parents attending the party listened to the station’s radio speakers as a dispatcher called firefighters to rescue Santa because his sleigh landed at Picnic Point Elementary School in Mukilteo and his reindeer were too busy playing reindeer games to make the final leg of the journey to the fire station.
Children lined up in front of the station to welcome Santa Claus as he arrived in the fire engine. Inside the station, Santa Claus handed out gifts and visited with children and firefighters.
AmeriCorps offers weatherization help
This year Workforce Development Council Snohomish County’s AmeriCorps team served more than 10,029 hours.
They served 124 clients in housing weatherization or energy efficiency services; worked to weatherize 120 homes; referred 11,418 clients to Snohomish County services; and recruited 72 volunteers, who in turn have served 603 hours.
Business helps food bank in Marysville
Employees from HCI Steel Building Systems and BlueScope Buildings North America in Arlington donated $1,940 in food, cash, and gift cards to the Marysville Food Bank on Dec. 18.
Employees decided to hold a food drive this year where the goal was to collect a minimum of $1,000 in donations.
An interdepartmental competition was established to see who could collect the most donations. By the end of the drive, total donations had almost doubled the original goal.
Elementary students donate to food bank
Chain Lake Elementary was one of several Monroe schools that held food and toy drives this holiday season.
The first class to bring 100 items was given popcorn by the PTA. The whole school got an extra 10 minutes of recess when they met their goal of 3,400 items.
All the teachers, staff, and the principal had to wear pajamas on Dec. 16 when students exceeded their goal of 5,000 items with a final donation of 5,700 items for the Sky Valley Food Bank.
Shop with a Cop helps kids in need
The Red Onion Burger restaurant and Mountlake Terrace Police Department hosted Shop with a Cop this holiday season.
The Red Onion received $1,200 dollars in donations to purchase Christmas presents for children in Mountlake Terrace. The city’s Domestic Violence Unit assisted in identifying 24 children who each received a $50 gift card to Fred Meyer.
Mountlake Terrace officers and Sean Richards, owner of The Red Onion Burger, met the children at the Lynnwood Fred Meyer Store on Dec. 21. When the holiday shopping was complete, the group went to the Red Onion Burger in Mountlake Terrace for a hosted dinner.
Group donates baby items to charity
The Hardanger Group recently donated baby items to the Layette Program at Catholic Community Services.
The CCS Layette Program provides essential items for newborn babies of mothers in need of a helping hand. The program has no funding and relies on volunteers and donations to provide approximately 40 layettes per month to qualifying clients.
The Hardanger Group of 20 women meets every Wednesday morning at Normanna Hall in Everett for socializing and needlework, including the traditional Norwegian needlecraft called Hardanger.
