Area Albertsons hook up to firm’s online service

Herald staff

Three area Albertsons stores bring to 95 the number connected to the company’s online shopping service.

In Everett, people living in the 98203 and 98208 ZIP code areas, and those in Lake Stevens 98258, can click on www.Albertsons.com for the service.

Shoppers make a list, select the store where they’ll pick up the order and pay by credit card. Their groceries will be waiting at the pickup counter.

  • Income up, savings down: Americans saw their incomes grow by 0.4 percent in August and spent all of it and more, which drove down the nation’s savings rate to the lowest point on record. Despite the strong 0.6 percent jump in consumer spending, analysts were still betting the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates unchanged next week.

  • Friday’s prices: Gold sold for $273.65 a troy ounce, silver for $4.925 and platinum for $578.80.

  • UAL losses expected: In a warning that sent airline stocks wobbling, UAL Corp. said Friday it expects to lose money in both the third and fourth quarters in the wake of United Airlines’ troubled summer of cancellations and delays. Officials blamed a loss of passengers due to months of labor- and weather-related turmoil, fallout from costly contract with pilots in August and the soaring price of jet fuel.

  • MATTEL CUTS LOSSES: Mattel Inc. will shed its money-losing Learning Co. unit in a virtual giveaway that ends a disastrous foray into software publishing. Mattel, which paid $3.5 billion in stock for Learning Co. last year, will sell the unit to an affiliate of closely held Gores Technology Group in Los Angeles for rights to a share of future profits. That means no cash up front and no guarantee of money in the future, analysts said.
