PHOENIX — A suburban Phoenix high school student who kept up with classes through cancer treatments but wasn’t allowed to walk at graduation said the support he’s received outweighs any bitterness.
Stephen Dwyer said Sunday that he never imagined his Facebook post about being denied from walking with his class at his Mesa, Arizona, high school would draw national attention.
The 18-year-old says he has received messages from multiple people thanking him for being a voice for people dealing with illness.
Dwyer withdrew from school his junior year to receive a life-saving bone marrow transplant for leukemia. He is 2½ credits short of graduating and will finish in December.
District officials say several students can’t participate in graduation each year because they don’t meet the required number of credits.
