ARLINGTON — They’re gettin’ their kicks with Route 66.
The Arlington High School Jazz Band 1 opens for the Seattle-based Route 66 swing band at a concert set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center, 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd.
The high school band, under the direction of John Grabowski, is looking forward to playing a part in the concert, said Sarah Arney of the Arlington Arts Council. The arts council, with help from the tourism fund of the city of Arlington, is presenting the concert. Proceeds will be used to buy public art, such as the sculptures along the Centennial Trail in downtown Arlington.
Route 66, featuring vocalist Cindy Solvang, is a 17-piece jazz orchestra with saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass and drums. Route 66 has been performing the best instrumental and vocal music from the swing era of the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s in the Puget Sound region for more than 25 years, Arney said. In 2004, Route 66 recorded its first disc, “Get Your Kicks …” The band’s second CD, “Don’t Forget Winona,” came out in 2008.
The band’s repertoire includes hits by Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Count Basie.
The high school jazz band is to join Route 66 for a few songs during the evening’s finale, Arney said.
