ARLINGTON — Lt. Terry Quintrall is the new acting police chief in Arlington.
Quintrall, 39, was appointed to the position after former chief John Gray resigned in a parting of the ways with the city in late June.
Quintrall is set to serve as acting chief until a new chief is hired, city spokeswoman Kristin Banfield said.
He has been with the Arlington Police Department since 1992 and has been a lieutenant since 1999, Banfield said.
At its meeting Monday, the City Council is scheduled to direct Mayor Margaret Larson to begin the search for a new chief by signing a contract with the Prothman Co., a Seattle firm that helps regional municipalities find employees.
The city expects the search for a new chief to take about six months, Banfield said.
“I expect that we will have a new chief on board around the first of the year,” she said.
Gray, a 30-year veteran law enforcement officer, had been the city’s police chief since 2001. He had been president of the Snohomish County Association of Sheriff and Police Chiefs.
Gray, 54, had said that the city wanted new leadership in the police department.
Gray’s contract with the city was scheduled to expire in October, Banfield said.
The Arlington Police Department has 28 officers and seven civilian employees. It responded to nearly 24,000 calls in 2007.
The council’s meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday in the council’s chambers at 110 E. Third St.
