ARLINGTON — Arlington High School students will be strutting homemade clothes onstage tonight during a fashion show at the Linda Byrnes Performing Arts Center.
The clothes were designed and sewn by students from AHS’s fashion design classes. Culinary arts students are preparing appetizers for the event and fashion promotion students involved with the DECA marketing leadership organization are planning the show.
Each of the 48 students enrolled in the fashion design class are expected to create a garment. The class focuses on fashion design and doesn’t include much sewing instruction, so creating an outfit from scratch is a considerable challenge, teacher Cheryl Allen said.
“The class explores the fashion industry,” she said. “It looks at the elements of design. Most of the students who come into the class already know how to draw, but we learn about color and texture and line.”
For the last few weeks, many students have been staying after school to finish hems and sew on zippers. Many don’t have sewing machines at home.
Allen used to teach a sewing class, but the class was canceled because the state determined sewing doesn’t provide a living wage, Allen said. Three years ago, she began teaching fashion design.
“Retail and fashion are the extreme interest of teenagers — from drawing to liking fashion,” she said. “We decided we could possibly corner that group.”
Admission to the show is $5.
Appetizers will be served at 6:15 p.m., and seating will follow at 6:45 p.m.
