ARLINGTON — The search for a site to build a skateboard park expanded Monday when the Arlington City Council allowed an advisory board to consider a second location.
The Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission will study the Boys and Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE, as an alternative site for a skateboard park.
In December, the council voted to place the skateboard park at Jensen Park near Kent Prairie Elementary School. Families near Jensen Park objected, fearing traffic and vandalism.
"I’m not saying we are giving up on Jensen Park," said Pennie Carey, chairwoman of the parks board. "Rather, the panel will explore the merits of each site before reaching a consensus."
The parks board will listen to representatives from different sides of the debate later this week and hope to make a recommendation to the city council later this month. The ultimate decision rests with the council.
The search for a skateboard park site has taken about a year.
At least two other city-owned properties were dismissed as potential sites because the city has other uses in mind for them.
Skateboard enthusiasts worked closely with the parks department in studying different locations and what would be wanted in a skateboard park. The Jensen Park location was particularly popular because it was accessible to many young people.
Although the search has run into opposition, the city remains committed to building a skateboard park. It has set aside $100,000 for the project.
The parks board plans to have a recommendation ready for public comment at a 7 p.m. March 18 city council meeting in the community room of the Boys and Girls Club.
