I-5 closures in Bellingham delayed

Lane closures on I-5 in the Bellingham area that were expected to cause traffic backups for miles, affecting Snohomish County drivers headed anywhere north of the county line, have been delayed.

The lane closures were expected to begin today and last until Monday, but the forecast of wet weather prompted state transportation officials to delay the work until the weekend of April 18-21. That will be the first of four weekendlong closures that will narrow I-5 to one lane.

During the closures, transportation crews plan to repave ramps and smooth bridge transitions.
