Learn best techniques for planting trees
Fall is a great time to plant trees.
A class that offers suggestions for tree selection and proper planting techniques is set for 7 p.m. today at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive.
Arborist Zsofia Pastor also plans to talk about how to create a natural landscape and use sustainable gardening practices.
The presentation is part of a series by the Camano Wildlife Habitat Project, sponsored by Friends of Camano Island Parks.

Book group to discuss ‘Last Town on Earth’
The Camano Library’s Third Thursday Reading Group plans to talk about the Thomas Mullen’s novel “The Last Town on Earth” at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the library, 848 N. Sunrise Blvd.
The novel is the subject of the current Stanwood-Camano: Together We Read project sponsored by Sno-Isle Libraries.

Learn to make healthy juices at recreation class
Learn how to make your own juice at a Arlington Parks and Recreation Department class scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the community room at the Arlington Boys &Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE.
The class, for adults and teens ages 14 and older, will be taught by Pam Koons, who will share ideas on making tasty fruit and vegetable juice. Ideas on easy clean up are part of her tips. Participants can take home recipes.

Creepy karaoke comes to library for Halloween
Teens are invited to disguise themselves in Halloween costumes and come to the Arlington Library for a night of creepy karaoke and games.
The event is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the library, 135 N. Washington Ave., and is sponsored by the Friends of the Arlington Library
A scavenger hunt, snacks and costume prizes also are planned.

Granite Falls
Lions Club raises thousands of dollars
The Granite Falls Lions Club has counted up its contributions for the year ending in June 2008.
Nineteen volunteers donated roughly 900 hours and raised thousands of dollars during the year, according to member Dixie Riggle.
Activities include delivering children in the “Lions Train” to the American Legion Christmas party, to the Arts in the Park event and Railroad Days.
They also help serve food at the Red Apple’s annual Christmas party and barbecue events. Fundraising projects included aluminum can recycling, White Cane Days and a booth at Qwest Field.
Members also operated a corn booth at the Evergreen State Fair and sold fireworks before July 4.
Donations included $2,500 for scholarships; $2,210 in food for families in need; $1,517 for eye exams and glasses; $625 to the Granite Falls Little League; $200 to summer baseball and $100 for diabetes, Riggle said.

Marysville
Work day planned for future dog park
A work day at Marysville’s planned off-leash dog park is scheduled for Oct. 25.
The event is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. next to the Strawberry Fields Athletic Complex at 6100 152nd St. NE.
Part of the city’s property near the athletic fields is being converted to the city’s first off-leash dog area. The city has named the area “Strawberry Fields for Rover,” parks director Jim Ballew said.
The city hopes to open the dog area in November.

Stanwood
Poker and pumpkins theme for fundraiser
Poker and Pumpkins is the theme of the second annual autumn fund-raiser for the Stanwood-Camano Community Resource Center.
The event is set for 5 p.m. Saturday at the Olson family barn near Stanwood and features a night of Texas Hold ‘Em and an opportunity to take home a Halloween pumpkin decorated by a local artist.
Proceeds benefit the center’s programs for youth, families and adults.

Quilters invite others to sew for wounded soldiers
Stanwood-Camano Hero Quilters group plans to continue its work to sew quilts for wounded veterans.
The group is set to meet for a quilting bee from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Stanwood Senior Center, 7430 276th St. NW.
Those interested in helping are encouraged to attend.
