This year, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Committee is expanded its annual Prodigies for Peace contest to include adults. The Prodigies for Peace writing and art contest helps students and adults draw connections between the people and the events that shaped the civil rights movement and the social issues that influence our lives today.
The MLK Jr. celebration is hosted by the City of Everett, YMCA of Snohomish County, Snohomish County Government and the United Way of Snohomish County.

City Council approves budget
The Everett City Council approved an operating budget of $111 million for 2012.
Earlier this year, the city expected to spend around $121 million in 2012 to provide basic city services. That number is now scaled back to accommodate flat revenue predictions that might persist for several years.
To make the cuts, the city took money saved by department heads this year and put it toward 2012.
Non-union employees won’t get a cost-of-living pay bump next year. Neither will the mayor nor City Council.
All but the most critical vacant positions won’t be filled. The city again put off early payments to fire and police pensions.
The city’s general operating budget pays for basic services such as the library, the police and fire departments, parks and streets.
Smokey Point: Lane closures on I-5
Tuesday night through Friday morning, crews plan to continue work on a new I-5 overpass at Smokey Point.
The left two lanes of both directions of 1-5 south of 172nd Street NW are scheduled to be closed from about 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night for shaft drilling and concrete pouring. Northbound lanes could remain closed later in the morning.
Terrace: Charging stations coming
The City Council has awarded a contract to High Mountain Electric, Inc. of Kirkland to install 10 electric-vehicle charging outlets at the Mountlake Terrace Park and Ride lot.
The cost of the charging stations is being covered by a $54,000 grant under the federal economic stimulus program, and the city is putting up $65,000 for installation.
The contract includes parking signs at the lot, located at 236th Street SW and I-5, and extra space for vans that transport people with disabilities.
