Everett: Guidebook author to speak

Award-winning Washington State Guidebook author Craig Romano plans to speak at 7 p.m. Friday at the Pilchuck Audubon Society at the Everett Firefighters Hall, 2411 Hewitt Avenue, Everett.

Romano is expected to talk about day hiking the Columbia River Gorge. He will be sharing tales from the trails from Ridgefield to Boardman, Ore., spotlighting 100 hikes. Books will be available for purchase at a discount at the meeting.

Marysville: District budget meeting set

A community meeting is planned to discuss the Marysville School District budget and plan for next school year 2013-14 in the board room at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Service Center, 4220 80th St. NE, Marysville. Jim Baker, executive director of finance, has been visiting every school across the district to share the budget development process and information with staff. This meeting will provide an opportunity for parents, staff and community members to learn more about the process and the plan for district finances.

Monroe: Lunches at Frank Wagner

The Monroe School District will serve free lunches to children up to age 18, from 12:15 to 1 p.m. weekdays, June 17-Aug. 23, at Frank Wagner Elementary School, 115 Dickinson St.

Fun learning activities also will be offered in partnership with local groups, such as the East County Senior Center and the Monroe Library. Go to http://monroecommunitycalendar.shutterfly.com/calendar for a schedule.

Terrace: Have coffee, chat with city officials

People from the community are invited to join city officials for a cup of coffee and hear firsthand what’s happening in the city. This casual event is planned from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Recreation Pavilion, 5303 228th St. SW.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions, provide opinions on city services or just listen to the conversation.

Whidbey: Rare tour of Fort Casey

Seattle Pacific University’s Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island is hosting an open house from 12 to 4 p.m. Friday. Visitors will get a rare chance to tour the Colonel’s House, reserved exclusively for the SPU president and vice presidents. Tours also will be available in various barracks and the newly renovated mess hall, where free snacks will be served. Guests will be able to visit the “Sea Lab,” a marine biology teaching facility, and play games in the center’s gymnasium. Admission to the outdoor pool will also be free.

Fort Casey, opened in 1890, was decommissioned after World War II, and SPU purchased the property in 1956. The buildings have been updated and renovated to house school groups, churches, nonprofit organizations and outdoor education classes.
