Edmonds: Bicycle commuting class
Swedish/Edmonds hospital plans to partner with the Cascade Bicycle Club to offer a free bicycle commuting class on Wednesday. The class will take place from noon to 1 p.m. at Cafeteria East on the second floor of the hospital and is open to the public. Swedish/Edmonds is located at 21601 76th Ave. W., Edmonds.
The class is an introduction to two-wheeled transportation and will feature information on choosing and adjusting a bicycle; riding safely and comfortably; planning your bike route; and outfitting yourself and your bike.
Lynnwood: 52nd Avenue bid OK’d
The Snohomish County Council approved a $5.7 million bid Wednesday for improvements along 52nd Avenue W. north of Lynnwood city limits.
The work by Interwest Construction, Inc. of Burlington is to be completed within 200 working days. The project begins south of 164th Street SW and spans north to 148th Street SW.
Improvements include adding bike lanes, sidewalks, curbs and gutters along both sides of the road. A center turn lane will be added as well. Other new features are to include planting strips in several spots and stormwater detention facilities. More than 85 percent of the money comes from federal sources, with the remainder covered by county dollars.

Monroe: Plan for school needs
The Monroe School District is looking for volunteers for two committees to help plan for the future of schools in the district and tell the school board whether they should ask for a measure from voters.
One committee will meet monthly to look at enrollment, safety, technology, current facility needs and other details. A second committee will meet less regularly to advise the first committee. A recommendation is expected to the school board by June 2014.

Mukilteo: Seminar on kids’ growth
The Mukilteo Library hosts a seminar for adults on “Growing Healthy Children: A STARS Training Series,” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The library is at 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd.

Verlot: County OKs bridge bid
The Snohomish County Council approved a $2.8 million bid Wednesday to retrofit a pier on Blue Bridge No. 538, which spans the South Fork Stillaguamish River on the Mountain Loop Highway.
Under terms of the bid, Razz Construction of Bellingham is to complete the work within 117 working days. A major flood event in 2006 on the South Fork Stilly caused serious erosion on both sides of the bridge.
