Sultan: Apply for City Council opening
The City Council seeks to replace Councilman Ron Wiediger after his resignation Oct. 14. Those interested in applying can fill out applications at City Hall, 319 Main St., or on the city’s website, www.ci.sultan.wa.us.
Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. Nov. 10. Interviews are scheduled for Nov. 18, when a selection could be made by the council.

Everett: Comment on UW president search
The public can attend and make comments at a forum from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday held by the University of Washington presidential search advisory committee.
Members of the committee will meet in the Rainier Room of Providence Regional Medical Center, 1330 Rockefeller Ave.
The university is trying to find a new president by the beginning of 2011-12 school year to replace former President Mark Emmert, who left the school Oct. 1 to become president of the NCAA.

11 schools named Schools of Distinction
Eleven schools across Snohomish and Island counties were named Schools of Distinction this year.
The schools are Darrington Middle School, Terrace Park in Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds Heights, Silver Lake Elementary School in Everett, Gateway Middle School in Everett, Mountain Way Elementary in Granite Falls, North Lake Middle School in Lake Stevens, Lake Stevens High School, Mukilteo Elementary School, Olympic View Elementary School in Oak Harbor and Elger Bay Elementary School on Camano Island.
Schools with the top 5 percent improvement rate on state math and reading tests earn the award from the Center for Educational Effectiveness of Redmond and the Washington chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.
Marysville: Art show at community center
The Ken Baxter Community Center will be turned into an art gallery for the Artistry in Nature art show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 6 at the center.
The show will feature art from the center’s woodcarving, gourd and driftwood sculpture classes. Work from the Northwest Gourd Patch, Quil Ceda Carvers and Northwest Driftwood Artists Association also will be part of the annual show.
The Ken Baxter Community Center is at 514 Delta Ave. in Marysville.

Firefighters wrap up a week of pink
Sunday marked the end of October and a campaign of pink shirts at the Marysville Fire District.
The International Association of Fire Fighters and the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters encouraged Marysville firefighters to don pink shirts during the last week of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The campaign, Cares Enough To Wear Pink, was meant to give hope, strength and courage to those fighting breast cancer, officials said.
