Monroe: Prisoners harvest their garden
The Monroe Correctional Complex earlier this month had the first harvest of its organic vegetable gardens, gathering radishes for use in inmate meals.
The gardens are part of an increased effort by the prison to trim costs through sustainable practices. The June 10 harvest will help the prison cut its food expenses.
The gardens were built last winter at the prison’s Washington State Reformatory unit.
To donate seeds, plants, soil, containers or fertilizer to the gardening effort, contact Kathleen Bechler at 360-794-2755.
